A new outdoor siren is being installed at Woodland/Navajo to improve our warning coverage
Today, a new outdoor warning siren is being installed just off the intersection of NW Woodland and NW Navajo for better notification coverage to the eastern part of our community. This siren will be solar powered versus using electricity. Using solar power is a better option. The siren sound will be different to the other sirens in the community. This siren is electronic where the others are mechanical. The siren is intended to notify those who are outdoors. The siren will sound when there is a tornado warning that is affecting our community or during times of National attack. The siren is tested the first Wednesday of each month at 11:00 am. Below is additional information about the outdoor warning siren.
MORE INFORMATION ABOUT OUTDOOR WARNING TESTS
When weather conditions permit the outdoor warning sirens are tested monthly on the first Wednesday of each month at 11:00 AM. This test is to assure the sirens are at the ready during times of emergencies. Outdoor Warning Sirens are to notify those who are outdoors that a life-threatening event is occurring and to seek shelter.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO WHEN YOU HEAR THE WARNING SIRENS
When you hear the sirens, you should SEEK SHELTER AND INFORMATION.
If you are outside, go to a per-designated shelter area such as a safe room, basement, storm cellar or the lowest building level. If there is no basement, go to the center of an interior room on the lowest level (closet, interior hallway) away from corners, windows, doors, and outside walls, put as many walls as possible between you and the outside. DO NOT open windows.
Once you are inside and safe, turn on the TV, radio or NOAA all hazards alert radio to be informed of the storm’s location, path and the duration of the warning. No all-clear signals are sounded once the warning has expired. Exit your shelter when you feel it is safe to do so. Be aware, however, that the situation can change so be prepared in case another warning is issued in the Riverside area.
We strongly recommend that every resident, business and school use a NOAA all hazards alert radio that has a battery back-up. Weather alert radios automatically activate to specific areas you program to warn and inform you when a warning is issued in the Riverside area. For more information about NOAA all hazards radios contact the Riverside Office of Emergency Management at 816-741-1191.
