RAIN POSTPONES FOURTH OF JULY FIREWORKS
The powerful storm that dumped more than three inches of rain on Highland’s Independence evening celebrations forced the cancellation of the annual fireworks display at Homestead Park for the first time in decades.
With the pyrotechnics staging area at Homestead Park still under water and no other place in town suitable to launch the four-inch shells that make up the display, town leaders made the difficult decision Thursday evening to forgo an event later this year and pack a super-duper punch with a double-helping of fireworks July 4, 2019.
“Our Fourth of July fireworks are legendary,” Town Council President Mark Herak said. “Thousands of us in Highland cap off our Independence Day holiday with fireworks at Homestead Park. We considered other dates this year but it would have been like having fireworks for fireworks sake instead of lighting up the night sky as only Highland can do on the Fourth of July.”
Another factor : increased costs associated with a 2018 display.
“Our job is to be good stewards with every taxpayer dollar,” Herak said. “We would have paid an additional $7,000 to $10,000 for the same fireworks display this year. Instead, we will be paying nothing extra for next year’s double feature. We chose what we believe is best for our town
