Chief's Weekly Email - July 9, 2018
Good morning,
The weekly police blotter has been posted to our website, you can find it at www.lytletx.org/police. Feel free to email or contact me if you have any questions. [email protected]
There is a city council meeting tonight at 6:30 PM at City Hall - “be there or be square”. I have attached the police department’s quarterly newsletter that was just released, I’m rating it as “above average”. It is also posted on our website.
Last week was a busy one for us. Officers handled 71 calls for service which is above average for us. We conducted 49 traffic stops and issued 28 citations and 21 warnings.
Officers made 5 arrests this past week. Arrest #1 – Sgt. Hanson pulled a person over for a traffic violation and the driver threw out a bag of weed. His plan might have worked better had it not been 8 AM in broad daylight. Arrest #2 – Lt. Dear, Cpl. Robison and I were headed to grab a quick bite before the fireworks show and we observed a vehicle that had run off the access road and was lodged in a drainage ditch. The guy was intoxicated so he went to jail and missed the fireworks. Arrest #3 – Lt. Dear and I were patrolling after the fireworks show and investigated some suspicious activity in the parking lot of the Best Western, we ended up arresting a fellow for violation of a domestic violence protective order. Arrest #4 – Lt. Dear conducted a traffic stop and determined the driver was intoxicated, she was booked into the Atascosa Co. Jail. Arrest #5 – Lt. Dear conducted a traffic stop and found the driver to have a suspended license with prior convictions, he was booked into the Atascosa Co. Jail.
There were 3 reported property crimes. The Lytle Exxon Food Market got hit with 3 $10 counterfeit bills, a shed was broken into on Lytle-Somerset St. (no damage and nothing taken), and the big property crime of the week occurred at the HEB C-Store. Somebody cut the chain on their storage area and took off with 6 BBQ grills valued at $714. I’m sure somebody must have seen that since that place is covered up with people all the time.
It looked like the city’s annual fireworks show on the 4th of July was going to be a “bust”. The rain damaged some of the fireworks but they were able to salvage enough to put on a really good show. We still had a good turnout considering the weather. The rain didn’t damper the cravings of a good free hotdog either, the Lytle VFW served up about 600 of them! We are a little shorthanded here at the PD and we were blessed that Constable Ricky Luna (Atascosa Co. Pct. 3) and 4 of his deputies showed up to provide assistance with event security.
The next big event is the Animal Care and Control’s Paws of Summer fundraiser. It will be Sat. July 21 at the Comm. Center, if you haven’t been to one of these you should plan to attend. There is a silent auction, a raffle (with good stuff) and food will be available a reasonable rate. Live music and guest appearances from a celebrity like Mayor Mark Bowen are also planned. Unlike the fireworks this takes place inside so the rain or heat can’t slow them down.
