Individuals evacuated for the W. Emerling chemical fire may now safely return to their homes & businesses

UPDATE (5:20 PM) - The ALL-CLEAR has been issued by AFD for the West Emerling chemical fire. Evacuated individuals may now safely return to their homes and businesses.

The Akron Fire Department has determined there is no ongoing risk of chemical exposure in the area and the scene is fully secure. However, AFD will remain on scene to address any final hotspots from the fire.

While this was a dangerous and potentially volatile situation, we are fortunate that no serious injuries were reported and no additional damage was sustained following the initial explosion.

On behalf of Mayor Dan Horrigan, the Akron Fire Department and the Akron Police Department we extend our appreciation to our many community partners for their assistance in ensuring a safe and comprehensive response – including the Summit County Incident Management team, Summit County EOC, the Red Cross, Stark County Hazmat team, Cuyahoga Falls Fire Department, Ohio State Patrol, CSX railroad, Ohio EPA, The University of Akron, Victim’s Assistance, Metro Regional Transit Authority, and others.

We thank all businesses and residents affected for their cooperation and patience throughout the response. Finally, we thank our well-trained and well-equipped first responders for their professionalism and diligence in protecting our citizens and keeping our community safe today, and every day of the year.
