Gum street shooting investigation continues, shooter in custody on weapons violations

Evansville Police continue to investigate the fatal shooting of Christopher Vinson. Vinson's death happened in the 800 block of E. Gum just after 12:00pm on Tuesday.
Police received a 911 call from COREY LUSTER, 40, just after the shooting. Luster said he was the person who shot Vinson and he remained on scene to speak with investigators.
Luster has been cooperative with police and provided a statement. He told investigators Vinson was on his porch banging on the door. Luster said Vinson was armed with a handgun at the time. Luster said Vinson refused repeated instructions to leave the property. During the encounter, Luster said he felt his life was in danger and he armed himself with a handgun. Luster said he eventually shot Vinson because he feared for his life. Vinson was found in the roadway in front of Luster's house. He died before officers were able to talk with him. Police located a handgun on Vinson.
Based on the information available at this time, Luster has not been charged with a crime related to the death of Vinson. The investigation is ongoing and police continue to ask anyone with information about the incident to call EPD or WeTip.
During the investigation, police determined Luster is a convicted felon and is prohibited by law from possession any type of firearm. Police recovered a handgun and a shotgun in the house. Luster was arrested on two counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon. Both counts are a level 4 felony.
