West Covina Police Officers Save a Life by Deploying Narcan

Date of Release: August 13, 2018

On August 12, 2018 at approximately 0939 hours, West Covina Police officers were dispatched to the 100 Block of North Azusa Avenue regarding a male in a vehicle who was not breathing. Officer Stephanie Waidley was the first officer on scene and recognized the male was likely suffering from a drug overdose. Corporal Eddie Flores arrived and retrieved the Narcan from his patrol car. Officer Josh Brenes also arrived on scene and immediately pulled the man from the vehicle. The man was in cardiac arrest and the officers began CPR. The officers also administered Narcan which was effective in saving the man’s life. The man was transported to a local hospital for treatment and released the same day.

With the funding authorized by the West Covina City Council, the West Covina Police Department began placing Narcan in every patrol car approximately two months ago. The availability of Narcan to officers in the field allows them to administer the drug and not have to wait for the fire department which has proven successful in saving the lives of those who overdose on narcotics.
