Family dog charges at deputy which results in minor injury to the dog and 11-year-old boy

SUMMARY:
On Tuesday, August 14th, at approximately 8:56 pm, a deputy from the Victor Valley Sheriff’s Station responded to a residence in the 15000 block of Tournament Drive in Helendale regarding a disturbance. Upon arrival, the deputy knocked on the door of the residence which was opened up by an 11-year-old boy. The family dog came toward the deputy, in a threatening manner. The deputy backed away from the front door and fired his duty weapon toward the dog. The dog sustained a graze wound to a paw and his side. The bullet then ricocheted off of the cement of the front porch and stucco of the house, and a fragment grazed the 11-year-old boy on the outside of his left leg. Emergency personnel responded to the residence. The boy was treated for a minor injury and did not require transport to a hospital. The owner took the dog to a nearby veterinarian for treatment, and the dog will recover from his injury.
Investigators from the Specialized Investigations Division were requested and are conducting the investigation.
