"Disasters Happen – Prepare Now, Learn How” is the theme of 2018 National Preparedness Month

Saturday September 1st, marked the beginning of National Preparedness Month this year.

In addition to the overarching theme for the month, each week has a theme highlighting different preparedness actions. The City of Simi Valley’s Office of Emergency Services (OES) will share the weekly theme along with tips related to the theme, through social media sites such as: Nextdoor, Nixle, Facebook, and Twitter. The City's OES has also added a National Preparedness Month Sub-Page on the City’s website that contains additional information and helpful links to FEMA's Ready Campaign: http://www.simivalley.org/departments/police-department/emergency-services/national-preparedness-month.

The focus for the first week of National Preparedness Month (September 1-8) is: Make and Practice Your Plan. Learn how to plan using the following steps from FEMA’s Ready Campaign:
• Make an Emergency Plan.
• Sign up for alerts and warnings in your area.
• Learn your evacuation zone and have an evacuation plan.
• Check your insurance coverage and review the Document and Insure Your Property guide.
• Plan financially for the possibility of disaster.

National Preparedness Month is the perfect time for families, schools, businesses, and organizations to take a few minutes to discuss their emergency plan and participate in preparedness training. September is a month of action when the entire community should prepare and learn about local hazards and other emergencies.

You can find additional resources for National Preparedness Month at the City's National Preparedness Month web page noted above or at www.ready.gov/september.
