Hurricane Florence Information for Residents
With the threat of severe weather and possible flooding associated with Hurricane Florence, APD would like to remind residents of these important tips:
• The largest threat to life from hurricanes is not the high winds: Prolonged, freshwater, inland flooding is the deadliest result of these storms.
• Conditions can change quickly. Please stay tuned to your favorite local news source for up to date weather forecasts.
• Citizens should prepare for rising waters, flash flooding, and remember to never drive across flooded roadways “Turn Around, Don’t Drown”. Most injuries and deaths occur when motorists try to cross flooded roads. Roads and bridges can be damaged or completely washed away beneath flood waters, and a few inches of water can sweep vehicles downstream.
• Get your home, business, workplace and family ready for whatever impacts this storm may bring. Also, please consider checking on your elderly neighbors and other vulnerable residents before and after the storm.
Should the Town experience power outages, please remember if you encounter a traffic signal that is totally dark, all drivers are to stop at the intersection, then proceed as if the intersection had stop signs controlling all approaches, unless:
• Law enforcement or other authorized persons are directing traffic, or
• There are portable stop signs located on select approaches.
If the signal is in flashing mode, drivers having a flashing red light are to stop and yield to other drivers before proceeding through the intersection. Drivers having a flashing yellow light are to proceed with caution. More information for rules at intersections is at https://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode/title46.2/chapter8/section46.2-833/.
Please Note: Brush collection will occur as normal once storm response efforts cease. Please remember to place the brush at the edge of the street but not in the ditch or gutter pan. Limbs will only be collected that are cut to less than 6 feet in length.
Consider keeping these important phone numbers on hand:
• Hanover County Communications Non-Emergency: 365-6410
