Fatal Traffic Collision
On September 16, 2018, at approximately 12:27 am, officers from the Torrance Police Department responded to a major injury traffic collision involving a pedestrian and motor vehicle at the intersection of Hawthorne Boulevard and Artesia Boulevard. On arrival, officers discovered that a 2006, Saturn SUV had collided with a pedestrian at the intersection of Hawthorne Boulevard and Artesia Boulevard. The initial investigation indicates the Saturn SUV was traveling northbound in the number four lane of Hawthorne Boulevard at Artesia Boulevard with a green signal when it collided with a pedestrian who was crossing Hawthorne Boulevard, eastbound on the south side of the intersection against a red signal.
The pedestrian, a 40 year-old adult male resident of Inglewood was treated by Redondo Beach Fire Department personnel at the scene and transported to a local hospital where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. The pedestrian was positively identified by investigators, but his name is being withheld pending notification to a next of kin.
The driver and sole occupant of the Saturn SUV, a 27 year-old female resident of Hawthorne was not injured in the collision. Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the collision at this time.
The northbound lanes of Hawthorne Boulevard were closed between and 177th Street and Redondo Beach Boulevard, along with Artesia Boulevard in both directions between Amie Avenue and Redondo Beach Boulevard for approximately 5 hrs hours during the collision investigation.
This collision is being investigated by the Torrance Police Department’s Traffic Division under the command of Captain Mark Underwood, Commander of the Special Operations Bureau.
