Attempted rape suspect arrested
On Sept. 17, 2018 at approximately 4:41 pm, a 33 year old female Menlo Park resident called police to report that she had been a victim of an attempted rape that occurred near the area of Oak Court and Woodland Avenue. The suspect was described as a Hispanic male in his early 20's, 5'10, lean build, with dark eyes wearing a bright blue shirt and basketball type shorts. During the incident, the victim was able to fight back and break free from the suspect. He was last seen on foot running down Oak Court towards Menalto Avenue.
Officers were in the area in a matter of minutes, and were able to locate a suspect matching the description. The suspect was detained shortly thereafter and was positively identified at the scene by the victim. Initial evidence shows that the suspect acted alone and there is no reason to believe the public is at risk. The suspect was identified as Rogelio Artiga, a 19 year old male from the City of East Palo Alto. Artiga was booked into the San Mateo County jail on the following charges:
* 664/261 PC-Attempted rape
* 243.4(a) PC-Sexual battery
* 207(a) PC-Kidnapping
* 591.5 PC-Prevent use of wireless device
