On Monday October 1st, 2018 at approximately 4:50 pm an email was sent to a teacher at Laguna Middle School threatening to “shoot up the school.” School officials immediately notified the San Luis Obispo Police Department. The email did not name Laguna Middle School or any specific individuals associated with the school in this threat.
During the investigation police were able to obtain an IP address showing where the email originated. The subscriber information on this IP address came back to an individual and residence in the State of Tennessee. San Luis Obispo police contacted authorities in Tennessee as well as the FBI to follow up with this information. San Luis Obispo police found no evidence to indicate the individual who wrote this email has any ties to San Luis Obispo or Laguna Middle School. As a result of our investigation, we learned from Tennessee authorities that a 14-year-old female was responsible for making these threats. We confirmed there are no on-going threats to any schools or businesses within the city.
Laguna Middle School Principal John Calandro issued a statement to the parents and faculty of Laguna Middle School alerting them of the threat. He stated, “Though the police do not believe we are in any danger, we are following our district safety protocols.”
This case has been turned over to the authorities in Tennessee for further investigation into this matter. Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to call the San Luis Obispo Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
