TEMPLE CITY, CA (Oct. 15, 2018)—Temple City ranks among the top 10 percent of all California cities when it comes to safety, according to a list released this month by the leading home security website SafeWise.

Temple City came in at No. 40 on SafeWise’s ranking of “California’s 50 Safest Cities of 2018,” which weighs 2016 Federal Bureau of Investigation crime report statistics and population data from the state’s 482 municipalities.

This marks Temple City’s fifth consecutive appearance on the list. To compile it, SafeWise first considered each California city’s number of reported violent crimes, including aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery. In the case of a tie, rankers also factored in the number of property crimes—such as burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft—that had occurred during the same year.

To ensure fairness despite differences in municipal population size, the site also calculated the rate of crimes per 1,000 people in each city. Per SafeWise, Temple City had 1.34 violent crimes and 15.88 property crimes per 1,000 people.

At the state level, California’s violent crime rate is relatively low—80 percent lower, in fact, than the U.S. average, said Alexia Chianis, a security analyst for SafeWise.

“Property crime rates were also quite low, with well over half the cities reporting fewer than 20 crimes of this type per 1,000 people,” Chianis added.

The Northern California city of Danville, which earned the ranking’s No. 1 spot, reflected rates of .20 violent crimes and 8.13 property crimes per 1,000 people. Other San Gabriel Valley cities featured on the 2018 list include Diamond Bar at No. 26, Glendora at No. 39 and Arcadia at No. 44.

“Our City Council keeps public safety as our highest priority, and this ranking justifies that,” said Temple City Mayor William Man.

In particular, Man praised the efficacy of public safety initiatives including Temple City’s Neighborhood Watch program, investment in additional nightly patrols, and partnerships with private companies such as Ring, which offered partially subsidized video doorbells to Temple City residents.

Likewise, Temple City’s contract with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department ensures continuous police coverage through the department’s locally based substation, Temple Station. That coverage, coupled with ongoing saturation patrols and other preventative measures to reduce crime, will safeguard the city and its residents for years to come.
