On October 18, 2018, Fremont Police General Crimes Detectives conducted a probation search at a residence in the 3800 of Artist Walk Common in the Centerville area, as follow up to a recent series of auto burglaries that had occurred in Fremont. In several of the documented police reports, the victim vehicles had no forced entry. Loss included small electronics, backpacks and personal identifying information.
On this date, detectives were specifically looking to conduct a probation search on 33 year old Daniel Sanchez, who was on probation, multiple times, for crimes related to theft. When detectives knocked on the door and made announcements to enter the residence there was no answer. They found the door to be barricaded with large items, including a tire. Shortly after the announcements, Brittany Tollner, a 29 year old female (also found to be on probation for theft) was greeted by detectives as she attempted to flee the residence through the back patio. Once detectives were able to enter, Sanchez was detained without incident. Inside the residence, large amounts of stolen mail, personal identifying documents, a methamphetamine smoking pipe, fake currency, burglary tools and other items consistent with identity theft were located. Additionally, an electronic remote control device was found. Detectives learned the device has the ability to detect a key fob’s unique code, copy the code and re-transmit it to another device. The device is believed to have been used in several of the auto burglary cases where there was no forced entry. Stolen mail and several of the documents were later confirmed to have been taken during the recent spree of auto burglaries detectives were investigating.
Sanchez and Toller were both booked into jail on the following charges:
- PC 530.5(c)(3) - possession of personal identifying information for 10+ people
- PC 466 - possession of burglary tools
- PC 476 - possession of fraudulent currency
- PC 496 - possession of stolen property
- HS 11364 - possession of drug paraphernalia
- PC 148(a)(1) - resisting/delaying a police officer
- PC 1203.2 - probation violation
