Halloween Reminder
Reminder: Today is Halloween. Drive cautiously. Watch out for trick or treaters. Do not assume that all children will cross the streets at the crosswalks. Be alert for a child darting into the roadway without looking or stepping into the roadway between two parked cars. After dark, be alert for children wearing dark costumes.
Halloween Safety for Kids: Advise your children:
Never, ever go into a stranger’s house or car or even ring their door for treats unless your parents are with you and say that it's okay. There are some people in life that aren't very nice to kids and you have to be careful. Always make sure that your mom or dad is within sight when you go out trick-or-treating.
Be careful when you cross a street. Make sure to look in both directions and make sure that there are no cars coming. If you have a little brother or sister with you, take their hand and help them get across the street, too. If the street has a stop light, wait until the cross walk light tells you that it's okay to cross now, but still check before you cross, look both ways.
If you are an older kid or young teen, and going out with friends, make sure that your parents know where you are going and who you are going with. This may seem like a pain but they are your parents and they love you. They just want you to be safe.
Vandalism is never cool! Throwing eggs at cars and houses is not cool. Someone has to clean it up and it could be you, if you get caught. You can also be arrested and punished as a juvenile. So, don't think that it's fun only if you can get away with it. It's never the right thing to do! Think about how you would feel if someone did that to your house and how bad it would make you feel.
Kids Costume Tips:
Costumes should be made of flame retardant material. If they are home made, make sure and use either a fire retardant spray or fabric that has been treated with fire retardant.
Reflector strips, a flash light or light stick to make them more visible at night. This will assure that they are seen by drivers and that you can keep an eye on them as well if they get ahead of you while trick or treating.
Do not include high heel shoes or long dangling pieces of costume that your child could trip over. A scraped knee or bloody nose can really ruin their fun.
If they are carrying a prop such as a gun or sword, make sure they are made out of a flexible plastic that will bend if fallen on. Most of the props available today are made of flexible plastic. Make sure gun does not look real.
If your child is wearing a mask, make sure that the eye holes are big enough to see not only in front but peripherally as well. You may have to cut them open further yourself. If so, use some black or gray grease paint around the eye socket to cover skin.
Stay together as a group if going out to Trick or Treat without an adult
Do not eat any treats until they are examined by your parents. This way they can check for any problem candy and get the pick of the best stuff!
SAFETY TIPS :
• Before crossing look left, right, and then left again.
• Use sidewalks. When there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic.
• Cross at corners and intersections and use marked crosswalks when possible and hold hands with younger siblings.
