Advisory

Cushing Police provide Halloween safety tips to help ensure a safe night of trick or treating.

Cushing – The Cushing Police Department would like to encourage all participants to have a fun, yet safe Halloween. “Throughout the year, we encourage community members to be safety conscience, but ask that they pay even more attention on Halloween, given the overall excitement of the night, the numerous community activities and the heavy residential foot traffic” Chief Tully Folden said. “Unfortunately, many children forget safety tips out of shear excitement as they make their ways through these events and neighborhoods trick-or-treating,” Folden said.

The Cushing Police Department would like to recommend the following safety tips:

Children should:

  • Go only to well-lit houses and remain on porches rather than entering houses.
  • Travel in groups and be accompanied by an adult.
  • Know their phone number in case an emergency telephone call is necessary.
  • Bring treats home before eating them so parents can inspect them.
  • Use flashlights, stay on sidewalks, and avoid crossing yards.
  • Cross streets at the corner, use crosswalks (where they exist), and do not cross between parked cars.
  • Wear clothing that is bright and reflective.
  • Consider using face paint instead of masks. (Masks can obstruct a child's vision.)
Parents and adults should:
  • Supervise the outing for children under age 12.
  • Establish a curfew (a return time) for older children.
  • Inspect all candy for safety before children eat it.
  • Drive slowly.
  • Watch for children in the street and on medians.
  • Exit driveways and alleyways carefully.
  • Have children get out of cars on the curbside, not on the traffic side.
