LOCATION: Calico Ghost Town
36600 Ghost Town Road
Yermo, CA 92389
VICTIM: Justin David Presley, 24 years old, resident of Orange, Ca.
SUMMARY:
On November 3, 2018 at 11:30 a.m., Justin Presley was exploring an open mine with friends in the hills above Calico Ghost Town when he fell approximately 100 feet down an abandon, vertical mine shaft. Presley suffered major injuries in the fall, and his friends called 911 for help.
San Bernardino County Deputies responded to the mine and determined a rescue by personnel with specialized training and equipment was necessary.
San Bernardino County Fire Department's Heavy Rescue Team (Rescue 40), the Sheriff's Cave Team, and Sheriff's Helicopter Air Rescue 306 responded to assist. Once at the command post, Air Rescue 306 transported Rescue 40 to the mine. Over the course of several hours, the Rescue 40 was able to successfully implement a rope system and extracted Presley safely from the deep mine. Air Rescue 306 transported him to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department would like to remind the public about the dangers of exploring open mines. Without the proper training and equipment, this type of activity can lead to serious injury or death.
