INCIDENT: Felony Arrest Following Pursuit
LOCATION: Big Bear Blvd. & Pineview Drive, Big Bear Lake
SUSPECT: Robert Standard, 28-year-old WMA, Resident of Sugarloaf
SUMMARY:
On November 3, 2018, at 10:37 p.m., deputies from the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station responded to multiple citizen reports of a reckless driver traveling Eastbound on Big Bear Blvd. from the Village area. The vehicle was reported to be driving with no tail lights, running red signals, and swerving in and out of opposing traffic at high rates of speed. Deputies observed the vehicle at Big Bear Blvd. near Knight Avenue and attempted to conduct a traffic stop; however, the driver of the vehicle failed to yield, resulting in a pursuit.
Deputies followed the vehicle to the Big Bear City Airport where it was driven through a chain link fence, across the airport property, and through additional fences on the opposite side of the airport and also on private property. The vehicle was found abandoned nearby in the middle of the road on Rainbow Blvd. As area checks were being conducted, deputies were flagged down by a citizen who reported that a male subject, later identified as Robert Standard and the driver of the evading vehicle, pretended to have a weapon and tried to steal his car. The citizen refused to give Standard his vehicle and Standard fled on foot. Shortly after that, Robert Standard was located by deputies outside a residence near the corner of Big Bear Blvd. and Pineview Drive.
Standard was detained without incident and booked into the Big Bear Jail on felony charges of attempted carjacking, evading a peace officer without regard for public safety, and vandalism. Standard remains in custody in lieu of $125,000 bail, with an arraignment hearing set for November 6 in San Bernardino County Superior Court.
The Big Bear Sheriff’s Station appreciates the diligence of community citizens who reported this incident which ultimately led to the arrest of Robert Standard.
