Advisory

School Bus Safety Law

The Shipshewana Police Department would like to remind everyone of the importance of school bus safety laws. Indiana State law requires all vehicles to stop whenever a school bus has activated its stop arm and red flashing lights to pick up or drop off children. This law applies to all roadways except for those divided by a physical barrier. Also, drivers need to be aware of increased pedestrian traffic in areas designated as “pick up” points for groups of children. Our police officers will continue to conduct concentrated patrols focusing on school bus safety as we have in the past. The LaGrange County Prosecutor’s Office is working along with law enforcement agencies in the county to find and prosecute violators. Drivers found to be in violation of the law will be cited but could also face criminal charges. Please help us keep our children safe.
