On July 10, 2018, at approximately 00:34 a.m., Milpitas Police officers responded to the Great Mall of the Bay Area parking lot regarding a report of a carjacking. Milpitas Police officers located the victim, who told officers a man pulled him from his Nissan Altima at knifepoint. Witnesses at the scene saw the Nissan Altima flee the mall parking lot followed by a Green Honda CRV occupied by multiple people. Minutes later, officers located the Honda CRV crashed and abandoned at an intersection adjacent to the mall parking lot. A records check on the Honda CRV revealed it was reported stolen from the City of San Jose. A few days later, the San Jose Police Department recovered the stolen Nissan Altima abandoned in their city.

During the investigation, Milpitas Police officers collected evidence from the stolen vehicles. The evidence led to the identification of the suspected carjacking suspect and two additional suspects associated to the stolen Honda CRV. All three suspects are juveniles and were being held at the Santa Clara County Juvenile Detention Facility on unrelated charges. On October 31, 2018, Milpitas Police detectives responded to the Santa Clara County Juvenile Detention Facility and issued the juveniles citations for the carjacking and possession of a stolen vehicle.
