At 10:08 AM officers with the Marion Police Department responded to a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of 221 and 226 South in Marion. Ivan Portal (of Miami Florida) was operating a Tractor and Trailer travelling North on NC 226 South and entered into the intersection of 226 and 221 in Marion, as a vehicle driven by a Marion woman was entering into the intersection travelling South on Rutherford Road. The vehicles collided in the middle of the intersection and came to rest north of the intersection on 221 North Bypass. 
 
 At the time of the collision there were power outages in the area that had affected the traffic light at this intersection rendering them inoperable. A witness to the crash stated both vehicles entered into the intersection at what appeared to be the same time.
 
All five passengers in the 2014 Kia Sportage were transported to Mission Hospital in Asheville for injuries sustained in the crash. The female driver later succumbed to her injuries while at Mission Hospital of Asheville. Portal was not injured in the crash.
 
The identity of the female driver is being withheld at this time until family is notified. This crash is still under investigation and copies of the report will not be released until it is completed.
