Joseph McDowell Historical Catawba Greenway Reopens after Flooding Damage Repairs
The Joseph McDowell Historical Catawba Greenway reopened on Friday morning, November 30 after cleanup and repairs related to the Hurricane Michael flooding event in October were completed. A contractor and City personnel completed the cleanup and repair work, including the removal of mud and debris along and adjacent to the Greenway, the installation of rip rap at a location along the Greenway that had eroded, bridge and fencing repairs and the addition of gravel that had washed away at exercise stations.
The City of Marion and McDowell County continue to work with FEMA and the State to process the reimbursement of damages related to Tropical Storm Alberto, Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Michael. The City is hopeful that full reimbursement will be received from FEMA and the State for Hurricanes Florence and Michael and that partial reimbursement will be made by the State for Topical Storm Alberto. The City of Marion has incurred $234,000 in known damages so far as a result of these three storms, with some road damage still due to be assessed by the State.
The City of Marion thanks the public for their patience while the Greenway was closed.
