West Valley Search and Rescue responds to Mt. Baldy to assist hiker who was dehydrated.

DATE/TIME: Sunday, December 2, 2018 / 11:08 am

INCIDENT: Search and Rescue

LOCATION: Mount Baldy

SUSPECT(S): N/A

VICTIM(S): Supakit Deesopha, 44-year-old resident of Alhambra

SUMMARY: On Sunday, December 2, 2018, Supakit Deesopha of Alhambra joined several of his friends in the Manker Flats area of Mount Baldy for a day hike. They left the Manker Flats parking area and were hiking to the Summit of Mount Baldy peak by way of Devil's Backbone trail when Deesopha started experiencing possible dehydration and cramping in his legs.

One of the other hikers gave him food and water, but Deesopha continued to experience difficulty in finishing the hike so he stopped to rest near Harwood saddle. Deesopha was given additional food and water but was unable to continue. Several of the hikers in his group called 911 to request medical attention. San Bernardino County Sheriff's personnel and the rescue helicopter responded to the area and located Deesopha, however, they were unable to land to pick him up or hoist him do to the wind and weather.

While Deesopha was waiting for assistance, another hiker stopped and gave him a sleeping bag to help keep warm during the dropping temperatures. The San Bernardino County West Valley Search and Rescue Team was contacted and responded to the incident. While the Search and Rescue Team members were hiking to Deesopha's last known location, some additional hikers found Deesopha and were concerned for his safety because of the dropping temperatures. They convinced him to hike down the Baldy Bowl Trail to the Manker Flats area with them. Upon his return to the Manker Flats area Search and Rescue Team members contacted him and offered him medical aid, food and water. Deesopha said he was uninjured and declined medical aid.

The West Valley Search & Rescue team and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department would like to remind all hikers to have the appropriate clothing, food, water, gear, and the 10 essentials when hiking in the wilderness.
