Alert

Winter Weather Advisory until 10:00AM Tuesday

Although the wintry precipitation has ended across the region and temperatures have warmed above freezing across all but the high elevations of the North Carolina mountains, some secondary roads remain snow and ice covered, especially across western North Carolina. Temperatures are expected to fall below freezing shortly after sunset this evening, and then remain below freezing until mid-morning to noon on Tuesday. This will allow most secondary and untreated roadways to re-freeze tonight, leading to widespread black ice. Conditions will improve Tuesday as temperatures climb back above freezing. More problems will develop Tuesday night as temperatures are forecast to fall below freezing again.

* WHAT...Widespread black ice expected. Patchy freezing fog will also develop.

* WHERE...The mountains of upstate South Carolina, northeast Georgia, and the high elevations of Polk and Rutherford counties in North Carolina.

* WHEN...Until 10 AM EST Tuesday. Untreated and secondary road surfaces will re-freeze after sunset this evening, leading to widespread black ice. Conditions will improve during mid-morning on Tuesday when temperatures warm back above freezing.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The hazardous conditions could impact the Tuesday morning commute.

* AFFECTED AREAS: RUTHERFORD MOUNTAINS ... PICKENS MOUNTAINS ... OCONEE MOUNTAINS ... HABERSHAM ... GREENVILLE MOUNTAINS ... POLK MOUNTAINS ... RABUN

Instructions:

A Winter Weather Advisory for Black Ice means that refreezing of roads will occur, resulting in the development of widespread black ice. Be prepared for very slippery roadways. Some roads that appear clear may be covered by a thin layer of ice. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your favorite source of weather information for the latest updates.
