Newberry Police Department changing to CodeRED Notification System - Please register as soon as possible using City website.
Because of the elimination of text messaging on the free Nixle platform, the Newberry Police Department along with the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office will be changing notification systems. We are imploring citizens to register for the new notification system as quickly as possible because we will not be able to text information as of Monday using Nixle.
We are very excited to announce a new partnership that includes the Newberry Police Department, Newberry County Sheriffs’ Office, City Of Newberry, Newberry County Department of Public Safety, Newberry County Coroner’s Office, and Newberry County Memorial Hospital to join together to use Code Red notification system. This will mean one location for notifications throughout Newberry County.
Citizens will be able to sign up for weather alerts, crime and scam alerts, community announcements, public safety issues, emergency management notices, hospital notifications, and much more. The citizen will have the ability to select what information they would like to receive and opt in so they only receive what they have selected to receive. Citizens will also be able to change their notification options at any time.
Code Red also has an app that can be downloaded to your smart phone. This app will let you know about alerts your location from any organization that uses CodeRED for the alerts and notifications even if you are traveling outside of Newberry County. Again, this feature works on the app and only if the area you are traveling to uses the Code Red notification system. The app can be downloaded from the Play Store or App Store on your phone. (This is a different registration and you need to register for the app as a new registration.)
Please register for a managed account so that you can see the groups and chose what messages you would like to receive. You will see weather alerts by phone call and text first. You are able to add an email address and chose options about the automatic weather alerts by email and then you can scroll down to see the additional groups we have created to better direct the type of messages you would like to receive.
To register you can go to the City of Newberry webpage at www.cityofnewberry.com and follow the Code Red link or the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office webpage at www.newberrycountysheriff.com.
In addition, the South Carolina Emergency Management Division already uses Code Red for their notifications so this will enable citizens to have a single source for alerts and notifications from the local and state level. This also enabled us to use grant funds to purchase the new system. Such unified communication would be critical in an emergency.
As with Nixle, if you would like these alerts and do not live in Newbery County, you can register using the address of the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, which is 550 Wilson Road, Newberry, SC.
We know that changing systems is very inconvenient and we pledge to make every effort to insure that we stay with the new system to the extent possible. This was not our decision but rather came when Nixle eliminated the text messaging capability.
If anyone has trouble registering for CodeRED, they can come to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office and we will be glad to assist them with their registration.
We will continue to send the emails through Nixle for a short period to encourage to move to Code Red. It is imperative that citizens who desire to continue to receive these alerts to sign up for Code Red as soon as possible.
