Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Urges Motorists to Drive Sober Over Holidays

If you drive drunk or high, you will get a DUI. Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station reminds drivers it’s deadly, dangerous and illegal to drive under the influence of illegal drugs, alcohol and some prescription drugs. Additional Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s deputies have been scheduled to be out on the road this holiday season specifically to keep an eye out for impaired drivers.

“Plan ahead,” said Sgt. Scott Shoemaker. “If you’re attending holiday gatherings and planning on consuming alcohol, designate a sober driver or have a ride-sharing app downloaded on your phone—and be ready to use it.”

Impaired drivers can face jail time, suspension of their driving privileges, fines and other costs of up to $10,000. Beyond the financial and legal penalties, impaired drivers face the risk of losing their own lives or taking someone else’s.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station advises the following actions to stay safe this holiday season:

* Remember, it is never okay to drive drunk or high. Designate a sober driver or plan to use public transportation or a ride share service to get home safely.

* If a friend or family member is impaired by alcohol or drugs and planning to drive, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get home safely. Don’t worry about offending someone—they’ll thank you later.

* Be alert and distraction-free, and if you see an impaired driver, call 911 as soon as it is safe to do so.

“We want everyone to enjoy the holidays and spend time with friends and family,” said Sgt. Shoemaker. “Please celebrate responsibly. It’s never OK to drive impaired.”
