Deep Gulf moisture flowing into the area over a stagnant wedge of high pressure will produce widespread rainfall from Thursday through Saturday morning. This rainfall will be heavy at times. Soils remain nearly saturated from recent snowmelt and rainfall, and many area streams and reservoirs are already running high. * Flood Watch for portions of northeast Georgia, North Carolina, and upstate South Carolina, including the following areas, in northeast Georgia, Elbert, Franklin, Habersham, Hart, Rabun, and Stephens. In North Carolina, Alexander, Avery, Buncombe, Burke Mountains, Cabarrus, Caldwell Mountains, Catawba, Cleveland, Davie, Eastern McDowell, Eastern Polk, Gaston, Graham, Greater Burke, Greater Caldwell, Greater Rutherford, Haywood, Henderson, Iredell, Lincoln, Macon, Madison, McDowell Mountains, Mecklenburg, Mitchell, Northern Jackson, Polk Mountains, Rowan, Rutherford Mountains, Southern Jackson, Swain, Transylvania, Union, and Yancey. * Periods of moderate to heavy rain will lead to excessive runoff in many areas. Some creeks and streams will leave their banks and flood low water crossings. This is especially true near south-facing mountain ridges such as the Blue Ridge Escarpment, but may occur in any part of the region. In urban areas, street flooding is especially possible, affecting homes and businesses and impeding travel. Already swollen lakes are likely to remain at abnormally high levels heading into the weekend.
