Alert

Flood Warning until 12:30AM Saturday

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has extended the

* Flood Warning for... Habersham County in northeastern Georgia... Rabun County in northeastern Georgia...

* Until 1230 AM EST Saturday.

* At 1203 PM EST, trained weather spotters had reported flooding in several locations near Clayton and Clarkesville as small creeks rose out of their banks. Gage reports indicate 3 to 6 inches of rain have fallen across Rabun and Habersham counties since Thursday afternoon. While the heaviest rain has ended, with soils already saturated, excessive runoff continues, which will be worsened by any additional rainfall that falls.

* Water releases from Lake Burton and Lake Rabun will lead to additional rises downstream on the lower Tallulah River in southern Rabun County. In Habersham County, the Soque River at Clarkesville likely has flooded Pitts City Park. The Chattahoochee River west of Cornelia is also above flood stage.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include... Clayton, Clarkesville, Demorest, Mountain City, Tiger, Dillard, Sky Valley, Tallulah Falls, Lake Rabun and Lake Burton.

* AFFECTED AREAS: RABUN, GA ... HABERSHAM, GA

Instructions:

Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Do not attempt to cross water-covered roadways, bridges, or low-level crossings. Only a few inches of rapidly flowing water can carry away your vehicle. It is not worth the risk. Please TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN. Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams, country roads, as well as farmland, drainages, and other low-lying areas. Please pay close attention to road signs indicating a flood-prone area. Obey all barricades, even if water is not currently over the road. Barricades are in place for your protection and indicate areas where flooding can occur rapidly and without warning. Only when it is safe to do so, please report floodwaters or landslides flowing over roads or threatening property to the National Weather Service by calling toll-free, 1, 800, 2 6 7, 8 1 0 1, by posting on our Facebook page, or via Twitter using hashtag NWSGSP. Your message should describe the event and the specific location where it occurred, including roadways, nearby cross streets, stream names and other landmarks.
