A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect 6 pm Friday through 6 pm Saturday for the southern half of Iowa including Des Moines.
We'll see a shield of precipitation develop on the north side of this system, which will bring plenty of moisture into Missouri, and will likely extend into at least southern Iowa. While the initial start of precipitation may fall as rain, temperatures will support a fairly quick transition to snow.
Precipitation will likely begin in southern Iowa as early as 4-5pm on Friday and will continue through Saturday afternoon. Snowfall along I-80 and in the Des Moines metro likely won't start until late on Friday evening, particularly after 8pm.
Based on the movement and trajectory of the system, Local meteorologists predict 3-6" of snow are possible along I-80, including the Des Moines metro. Areas farther north like Ames and Marshalltown can expect 1-3". Fort Dodge won't get much snow but you may have to deal with some freezing drizzle. For southern Iowa, snowfall totals will likely reach the 4-7" range.
