High Wind Warning & Wind Chill Advisory through tomorrow

Everyone encouraged to take this High Wind & Wind Chill very serious.

High Wind Warning Until 7am Monday & Wind Chill Advisory 4pm today through 10am Monday

A cold front moving east of the region this morning is ushering in strong winds and much colder air. Northwest winds will increase rapidly by daybreak this morning and then maximize during the daytime hours. Gusty mountain winds will persist into tonight, while wind gusts will slowly diminish east of the mountains. The most intense area of damaging wind gusts today will likely impact locations along and near the Blue Ridge escarpment.
Wind chills as low as 10 below zero expected. Black ice may contribute to slippery Road conditions as temperatures fall quickly below freezing today. Northwest winds may gust above 50 mph at times.

LOCATIONS: The North Carolina Blue Ridge mountain area, from Henderson County northward to Avery, western Caldwell Counties and Buncombe

HAZARDS: Strong to damaging winds. Cold wind chills could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Plan on very slippery Road conditions.

TIMING: Northwest winds will increase rapidly by daybreak today. The strongest winds are expected from shortly after sunrise through the afternoon hours. Winds will diminish very slowly tonight.

WINDS...Northwest 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph.

IMPACTS:
Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Instructions:
Wind Chill Advisory means that cold air and the wind will combine to create low wind chills. Frostbite and hypothermia can occur if precautions are not taken. Make sure you wear a hat and gloves.

A High Wind Warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected or occurring. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage. Please report damaging winds by calling the National Weather Service toll free at 1-800267-8101. Leave a message with your observation and the specific location where it occurred. You can also post your report to National Weather Service Greenville Spartanburg Facebook or tweet your report using hashtag nwsgsp.

Instructions:

Stay indoors if possible and if you have to go out dress warm. Carry extra supplies including warm clothing in vehicle. Expecting downed trees and power lines. Lines will not be worked on during high winds.
