On 01/29/2019 just before 10:00 am eastern time, fugitive non- compliant registered sex offender Keith Adam Kappler was located and taken into custody without incident by the US Marshals Service Great Lakes Taskforce. Kappler was found in the 3300 block of W Elm St in McHenry Illinois and was booked into the McHenry County Jail and is awaiting extradition back to Steuben County, Indiana to face charges of failure to register as a sex or violent offender, a level 6 felony. An arrest warrant had been issued for Kappler out of Steuben County on 01/22/2019. Those criminal charges were a result of a Sheriff's Office investigation into allegations that Kappler was not living at his last registered address in Steuben County and failed to notify the Sheriff's Office. The investigation indicated that Kappler had left the state of Indiana and Sheriff's detectives reached out to the US Marshals Service Sex Offender Investigation Coordinator for the Northern District of Indiana, Senior Inspector William Boothe who assisted the Sheriff's Office with coordinating fugitive investigation efforts in the state of Illinois. The Sheriff's Office would like to thank all those who assisted with providing tips and information.
