News Release - Palm Springs Police Department

On February 2, 2019 at approximately 2:58 pm, Palm Springs Police dispatch received a 911 call from RI International, located at 2500 N. Palm Canyon #A4.  The reporting party told the dispatcher that there was a man in the lobby of the business armed with a handgun and making suicidal statements.  PSPD officers arrived on scene, set up a perimeter, and were able to evacuate employees of RI International as well as the surrounding businesses.  The man remained in the lobby of the business alone and held the gun to his head.  Officers learned that the man did not harm or threaten anyone with the firearm and had only made statements that he was going to harm himself.  Dispatch set up phone communication between the man and officers on scene.  As a result of the negotiations which lasted only a few minutes, the man agreed to surrender.  The man exited the business unarmed and was detained by officers.  During a sweep of the lobby, officers located a 9mm handgun.  No one was injured during the incident and the scene is now safe.

Due to confidentiality reasons, the man's name will not be released at this time.  The man was taken to a mental health facility and faces criminal charges of felon in possession of a firearm and probation violation.
