Campbell Police Department has successfully resolved an incident involving an armed suspect who barricaded himself inside Denny’s.
Campbell, CA - The Campbell Police Department has successfully resolved an incident involving an armed suspect who barricaded himself inside the Denny’s Restaurant at 2060 S. Bascom Avenue.
On Friday, February 8, 2019 at approximately 5:30 AM, a customer at the Denny’s Restaurant approached an employee in the parking lot. After a brief confrontation, the suspect removed a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the employee. The suspect then walked back inside the restaurant and sat in a booth.
Campbell Police officers arrived at the restaurant and were able to safely evacuate all remaining employees and customers. For the next eleven hours, the Campbell Police SWAT and Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) made numerous unsuccessful attempts to communicate with the suspect to get him to come outside and surrender.
It was not until approximately 3:00pm, almost 10 hours after the incident started, when the suspect was seen on the roof of the restaurant. The suspect went back down to the restaurant and continued his refusal to exit the restaurant. Chemical agents were introduced inside the building which caused the suspect to come outside and surrender.
The suspect was safely taken into custody and officers confirmed there was no one else inside the restaurant. We are continuing to investigate what led up to today’s events. If anyone has information regarding this incident, please contact our Investigations Unit at (408) 871-5190.
The Campbell Police Department is extremely grateful this dangerous incident was able to be resolved safely. We understand how incidents such as these can impact an entire city and appreciate the patience and support shown by our community.
