Disturbing Scam - attempting to gain access to houses
***PRESS RELEASE-Attempted Local Scam Involving Dish Network***
On Wednesday February 13, 2019, a resident of Sanbornton received a scam call which is new to the area. The caller claimed to be from Dish Network, the satellite provider. The phone number on the caller ID was shown to be Dish Network’s customer service number. The caller stated that the company wanted to change or move the satellite dishes, and they needed to get into the house to move the receivers around in the house as well. The caller then asked the resident to give descriptions of the rooms in the house that contained the receivers.
Fortunately the resident became suspicious and recommended the people come on a day when her husband was home. She then decided to call Dish Network and learned that this was a scam and no one from their company had called.
The caller obviously cloned the phone number for Dish Network. This is very disturbing because it shows the scammers are looking to get access to the residences. They could be setting up to commit burglaries or other crimes. These criminals are obviously in the local area.
This type of scam could be used with any utility-type company name. Phone numbers could easily be cloned to look legitimate. If any company calls looking for access to your home, do not take it at face value. Do your research and call the company at the phone number on your bill, or other official documentation, and verify the contact.
