Train vs. vehicle collision last night. No injuries reported.
On 02/13/19 at about 11:04 pm, Officers responded to a vehicle vs train collision in the area of 67th St. and Shellmound St. railroad crossing. The driver of the vehicle made a turn onto the railroad tracks while following their GPD/driving app. Once the driver of the vehicle realized what happened he was too far down the tracks and his vehicle became stuck on the tracks. The occupants of the vehicle exited the vehicle and stood off to the side waiting for assistance. A short time later, an Amtrak train traveling on the tracks collided into the stuck vehicle. While the speed of the train was slow at the time of the collision, the damage to the vehicle was significant. There were no reported injuries as a result of this collision.
Amtrak Police and Union Pacific Police officers responded to the scene to investigate. Union Pacific Police will be the primary investigating agency of this collision. At this point it does not appear drugs or alcohol played a factor in this collision. It appears the driver was simply following a GPS device and there was poor visibility due to the rainy conditions at the time of the collision.
The Emeryville Police Department and its staff are committed to increasing the traffic safety of the City and preventing incidents like these. Please ensure you drive safely during bad weather conditions.
