MEDIA ADVISORY/NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Police respond to person in crisis on rooftop
Date: February 21, 2019
Location of Incident: 1501 Powell Street
Date/Time Occurred: February 21, 2019 6:54PM
On Thursday February 21, 2019 at 6:54PM the Emeryville Police Department dispatch center received a phone call of a subject on the rooftop of 1501 Powell Street. Officers arrived and found a distraught male on the building’s edge. Medical and Fire personnel were staged as two Emeryville officers, both of which are Crisis Intervention Team trained, began talking with male. After over an hour of negotiating with the male subject, the subject suddenly ran to the building’s edge and jumped from the top of the building across to the Powell Street overcrossing. Officers pulled him over the ledge of the overcrossing and onto Powell Street. The subject was initially compliant but then began to struggle with officers on the overcrossing. During the struggle the male broke the handcuffs officers had used to restrain him while waiting for the medical personnel to arrive on the overcrossing. Officers were eventually able to safely restrain him. Medical personnel arrived on the overcrossing to transport him for a mental health evaluation. No injuries were reported in the incident and there are no criminal charges pending.
