The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for the Coastal North Bay, including Sausalito. The Flood Watch is in effect from the afternoon of Monday, February 25 until late Wednesday night. Forecast rainfall totals during this period of time range from 3 to 5 inches near the coast and in the valleys of the North Bay, and from 5 to 9 inches in the hills and mountains of the North Bay. In addition to the flood potential, mud, rock, and debris flows could occur in areas of steep terrain. Locally strong and gusty winds may result in downed trees, and power outages will be possible.

The City of Sausalito is working with Caltrans and the National Park Service to continue to monitor the hillside above Sausalito Boulevard. The City will be monitoring the storm drain system and water runoff in the area, including the redirection of water runoff from National Park Service property down Sausalito Boulevard. City staff will also be monitoring runoff from the hillside between 406/408 Sausalito Boulevard and 57 Crescent Avenue to confirm it is running down the storm drains on Crescent Avenue.

The National Weather Service forecast for Sausalito as of 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 24 is as follows:

Monday. Rain likely, mainly after 10 a.m. The rain could be heavy at times. Cloudy, with a high near 57. Breezy, with a south wind 18 to 26 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Monday Night. Rain. The rain could be heavy at times. Low around 54. Windy, with a south wind around 32 mph, with gusts as high as 41 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Tuesday. Rain. The rain could be heavy at times. High near 59. Breezy, with a south southeast wind 23 to 26 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Tuesday Night. Rain. The rain could be heavy at times. Low around 54. Windy. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Wednesday. Showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 60. Breezy. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Wednesday Night. A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 51.

Prepare for the Storm
To prepare for the storm, please check your property for areas where flooding could occur due to clogged drains or gutters. Move valuable belongings from areas that are prone to flooding, including your garage or carport. Make sure you, your neighbors, and your loved ones have an abundance of food, water, and batteries. Recharge your laptop computer, cell phone, and other mobile devices as a precaution against a power outage. Prepare a Go Bag in case you need to make a rapid evacuation of your home.

The Public Works Department has a supply of sand and sandbags available to help residents protect themselves from flooding. Sand is offered to both residents and merchants from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the City Corporation Yard at 530 Nevada Street. Sand and bags are also available at all hours across from the gym in the MLK parking lot. Access to the lot is from Coloma Street. If the Corporation Yard is closed and there is an emergency, please contact the Sausalito Police Department at (415) 289-4170 to gain access.

During the Storm
During the storm, if you see a storm drain on your street that is filled with leaves or debris – and you don't see Public Works crews in your area – put on your brightest rain gear and go ahead and remove the leaves. Doing so safely will help avoid flooding onto your property or a neighbor's property.

Always call 9-1-1 if you come across a downed tree or live wires. Do not attempt to move any wires from the roadway or from your property. Stay away from trees, pools of water, and other objects that may be in contact with power lines.
