INCIDENT: Felon in possession of a firearm

LOCATION: 1400 block of J Street, Needles

SUSPECT: Jorge Estrada, 25-years-old, Transient

SUMMARY:
On February 27, 2019 at 11:00 a.m., Deputy Hernandez conducted a vehicle check of a suspicious vehicle parked behind a motel in the 1400 block of J Street in Needles. Deputy Hernandez recognized one of the occupants of the vehicle as Jorge Estrada. Deputy Hernandez was aware Estrada had outstanding warrants for his arrest and was wanted for questioning regarding a murder investigation in Phoenix.

Deputy Hernandez attempted to take Estrada into custody but Estrada fought with him and Hernandez tried to flee on foot. As he was running away, Estrada threw a loaded pistol into the bushes. Estrada was quickly apprehended and the pistol was located. A records check showed Estrada was a convicted felon and prohibited from possessing any firearms or ammunition.

Detectives from the Phoenix Police Department traveled to Needles and conducted their investigation.

Estada was booked at the Needles jail and faces charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and assault on a peace officer. One of Estada's warrants was for a violation of his terms of Post Release Community Supervision and he is being held without bond.
