Mayor Joe Hogsett unveils new community public safety tool; residents can submit tips, register cameras with IMPD
Mayor Joe Hogsett joined Public Safety Communications (PSC) Chief Kevin Wethington and community leader Toby Miller to roll out a new resident-focused web-based public safety tool. Replacing the antiquated SafeTown.org, CrimeReports.com comes with a crime map that includes added search and filter features, the ability to submit an anonymous tip directly to Crime Stoppers, and a camera registry. These new interactive features are aimed at reducing the time, resources, and taxpayer dollars necessary to solve crimes, hold perpetrators accountable, and make Indianapolis neighborhoods safer.
“CrimeReports.com is more than a list of crimes and locations – it provides services that enable cooperation between our community and the men and women sworn to protect it,” said Mayor Hogsett. “With tools like this, we can all be more informed about what goes on in our neighborhoods and more actively engaged in creating a safer city.”
Crime Map
The crime map on CrimeReports.com will help to foster transparency between IMPD and Indianapolis neighborhoods, with features that allow residents to create crime alerts as well as filter reported crimes by a specific date, observe crime trends on certain days of the week, or view crash data on the morning commute. The crime map will operate on a delay to protect the safety of both victims and first responders.
Submit a Tip
Accessible directly from the crime map, the CrimeReports.com tip submission function allows residents to report suspicious activity in their area at the moment they learn a crime occurred. Tips submitted through CrimeReports.com will be channeled through Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana to preserve anonymity. Residents can report information such as suspect and vehicle descriptions or additional details they may have about a crime.
Register a Camera
The CrimeReports.com camera registry allows IMPD to better investigate incidents in Indianapolis neighborhoods, giving detectives the ability to go directly to where a security camera is located and, with the owner’s assistance, view the footage to see if important information about the incident may have been captured. IMPD will not have access to registered security systems – detectives may reach out to residents near a crime scene to request footage from the date and time in question. The program is completely free and voluntary, and residents are under no obligation to provide video footage if requested. The location of all registered cameras is secure and only available to IMPD personnel.
CrimeReports.com comes as part of the City’s $35 million in public safety technology investments announced in 2018, which include funding for a new Computer-Aided Dispatch, radios, and radio network managed by the Public Safety Communications division of the Office of Public Health and Safety, supporting public safety professionals in providing better service to the Indianapolis community.
CrimeReports.com can also be accessed via mobile application available on both the Apple and Android app stores.
