Wilmington Police Victim Services Unit partners with LOMA Coffee to get the word out about Sexual Assault Awareness Month

In recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Wilmington Police Department’s Victim Services Unit is partnering with LOMA Coffee to help get the word out about resources for victims and survivors.

On Tuesday, April 2 – the national Day of Action for Sexual Assault Awareness Month – patrons of LOMA Coffee (239 North Market Street) will receive special coffee sleeves marking the month and providing information about resources available to victims. The initiative is part of a broader awareness campaign that will be taking place throughout April.

“We wanted to partner with LOMA because of the local connection to the Wilmington Community,” said Amy Hopkins, WPD Victim Services Specialist. “Broader awareness about consent and supporting survivors can benefit everyone.”

According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, Sexual Assault Awareness Month “is a campaign to raise public awareness about sexual violence and educate communities on how to prevent it.” The theme of the campaign, “I Ask,” emphasizes and champions that asking for consent is “a healthy, normal, and necessary part of everyday interactions.”

“It is important to have a month to recognize victims of sexual violence and to share information and resources in the State,” said Stephanie Hamilton, WPD Victim Services Supervisor. “We want victims to hear that they are believed and supported every step of the way.”

The Victim Services Unit will also join partners across Delaware and throughout the country in recognizing Crime Victims’ Rights Week during the week of April 7.

Chief Robert J. Tracy emphasized the importance of spreading awareness of the many resources available to victims and survivors.

“Sexual Assault Awareness Month is an important annual campaign with a critical message,” said Chief Tracy. “Our Victim Services Unit professionals work tirelessly to offer support for victims of crime, and this initiative is a great way to let even more people know about these resources.”
