On Friday, April 5, 2019, a homeowner in the 1400 block of Greenhaven Street, San Dimas, discovered a crude swastika burned into the artificial turf of his front lawn. It appeared the turf was burned with a chemical or flame. That same date, deputies discovered similar swastikas burned on the surface of the asphalt roadway nearby on Valley Center Street in unincorporated Covina. On Sunday, April 7, 2019, a similar swastika was found burned onto the asphalt street in the 1200 block of Stratford Lane, San Dimas. Investigators also learned of three small brush fires to the north of 801 W. Covina Bl., San Dimas, and that a security camera there had been vandalized in this time frame.

Investigators learned that three boys ages 13 to 14 had been seen in the area during the late night hours when the crimes occurred. The boys were located on Monday, April 8, 2019, in San Dimas. They were a 14 year old male from Long Beach, a 13 year old male from Covina, and a 13 year old male from Hemet. (Because they are juveniles, the names of the suspects will not be disclosed.) A search warrant was served on April 8, 2019, seeking additional evidence. Investigators learned the fires were created using cigarette lighters and flammable aerosol cans. Statements from witnesses and the boys themselves, evidence, and video from security cameras connected the three boys to these crimes. Potential charges include those related to Arson, Hate Crimes, and Vandalism.

No motive for these acts was yet discovered, but the investigation indicates the acts of hate, arson and vandalism were not directed at any particular person(s). The facts of the investigation will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office for filing consideration. The three juveniles were transported to a Los Angeles County juvenile hall.

We are grateful for the tenacious work of our personnel in solving these disturbing crimes. We're also grateful to Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger for her offer to procure a reward to help solve this case, which ultimately was not used.
