Hello Milpitas:

We would like to share some of the good police work done over this past weekend to help keep our community safe. The Milpitas Police Department investigated several notable cases and made numerous proactive arrests; which included drunk drivers, possession of controlled substances, and warrant arrests.

On Friday, April 5, 2019, around 6:30 p.m., Officer Ryon Lawson was assigned to the Great Mall and responded to the food court for a patron choking on food. Ryon, who was on foot at the time, ran to the food court and arrived in under a minute! Without hesitation, he began applying the Heimlich maneuver to the victim, which dislodged the food. His swift action ultimately saved a life.

Additionally, our officers arrested eleven people as a result of proactive traffic enforcement stops and calls for service. On Friday evening, an officer attempted to stop a motorist for a Vehicle Code violation in the area of North Milpitas Boulevard and Dixon Landing Road. The vehicle fled from the officer and was located at a nearby apartment complex. The driver ran from the vehicle, which led to a short foot pursuit. The driver was arrested after a brief struggle and was booked into the county jail for resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance for sales, and for being under the influence of a controlled substance. Other arrests included a restraining order violation, possession of a controlled substance, and warrants.

During the same time period, officers made four arrests of people driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI). A 17 year-old juvenile was arrested for DUI after she crashed her vehicle into a tree and a parked car in the area of Yosemite Drive and Piedmont Road. She was uninjured and later released to her parents with a citation. On Saturday morning, an officer stopped a vehicle for a Vehicle Code violation on South Main Street near Great Mall Parkway. The driver was found to be DUI and was booked into jail. Another driver was stopped for a Vehicle Code violation on Great Mall Parkway near Montague Expressway and arrested for DUI. That evening, officers responded to a report of a driver slumped over the steering wheel of a vehicle in the area of McCarthy Boulevard and SR-237. Officers contacted the driver and determined he was DUI.
 
The driver was arrested and booked into county jail.

Despite proactive enforcement efforts throughout the state, statistics reveal 1,120 people were killed in alcohol related collisions on California roads in 2017. Last year, the Milpitas Police Department investigated 32 vehicle collisions involving drivers that were under the influence of alcohol or drugs. These accidents resulted in 21 injuries that could have been prevented.

If you choose to drink, don’t drive; consider a designated driver, ridesharing, public transportation, or a taxi to get to your destination safely.
