Phone scammers targeting area residents attempting to gain personal identifying information.
These scammers appear to be targeting senior residents who are receiving Social Security benefits.
Things to know:
1. The Social Security Administration (SSA) will NOT call to threaten your benefits. They will not ask you to send cash, wire money or place money on gift cards (then provide them with the codes).
2. If you are truly concerned about what a caller tells you, hang up and call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213 to speak with an actual SSA agent.
3. If you receive one of these calls, hang up immediately. Never give or confirm you social security number, bank account number or other personal identifying information to ANYONE who calls you.
