INCIDENT: Subject arrested for vehicle burglary

OFFICERS INVOLVED: Ptl Brad Kerney and Ptl Jeff Kless

ACCUSED: Raul Velez, Age 41, Asbury Park, NJ

NARRATIVE:

On May 17, 2019 at approximately 07:11 am Ptl Jeff Kless was dispatched to the area of Poplar Ave and Norwood Ave for a report of a subject attempting to break into vehicles. Upon arrival Ptl Kless was given a description of the accused who was reported to be looking into vehicles and pulling on door handles to make entry. The accused was reported to be operating a beach cruiser style bicycle.

Ptl Kless observed the described bicycle in the area and subsequently located the accused inside a vehicle. The accused was pretending to be sleeping in an attempt to evade apprehension. Ptl Kerney then arrived on location to assist with the investigation. The accused was found to be in possession of proceeds from inside a victim’s vehicle and was subsequently arrested.

Velez was transported to Deal Police headquarters for processing and charging. Velez was charged with 1 count each of Burglary and Theft. In accordance with bail reform guidelines, Velez was committed to Monmouth County Jail pending a court date. The Deal Police Department reminds the public to always lock your vehicles when you are not with them and to report any suspicious activity to the police without delay.
