2019 Memorial Day Marine Enforcement Operation summary

DATE/TIME: May 25th - May 27th, 2019

INCIDENT: Memorial Day Marine Enforcement Operation

LOCATION: Colorado River Station

SUMMARY:
The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Colorado River Station Marine Enforcement Unit conducted it's 2019 Memorial Day Weekend Operation, starting on May 25, 2019 through May 27, 2019. The operation was conducted along the Colorado River from the California/Nevada state line to the Riverside County line.

The majority of the operation was focused on the waterways with resorts, launch ramps and marinas along the river and lake. A total of eleven patrol vessels, one Rescue Dive Team, one Gang Enforcement Team, an OHV team and one Sheriff's Department helicopter team were deployed throughout the area.

There were a total of nine arrests made; six for Boating Under the Influence, two for resisting arrest and one warrant arrest. Thirty two citations were issued for various boating law violations. Six boating accidents were investigated throughout the weekend.

One major injury accident occurred on the Parker Strip on Saturday. A 12-year-old boy was swimming in the Colorado River by Emerald Cove Resort when a boat struck the child. The boy suffered major injuries to both legs after being struck by the vessel's propeller. The 12-year-old victim was flown to the Phoenix Children's Hospital for treatment.

The Colorado River Station Marine Enforcement Unit urges all California residents to go online to californiaboatercard.com and take the online test in order to obtain their boater card which is now required by law. The Colorado River Station Marine Enforcement Unit is, as always, dedicated to providing a safe boating atmosphere for the public and reminds everyone to wear their life vests and to boat sober.
