Several waves of heavy rain producing showers and thunderstorms will move northward across the western Carolinas and northeast Georgia today, tonight, and Sunday. These showers will be very efficient heavy rain producers, easily dumping 1 to 2 inches of rainfall in an hour in the heaviest downpours. Some of the rain shower bands could set up such that certain locations within the Watch area experience multiple showers and thunderstorms in short succession. Although conditions have been dry over the past month, heavy rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches, with 5 to 6 inches in a few locations, affected the region on Friday. This could lead flash flooding developing quickly, especially in urban and poor drainage areas. The heavy rain threat may linger beyond the period of the current Flash Flood Watch. * Flash Flood Watch to include portions of northeast Georgia, North Carolina, and Upstate South Carolina, including the following areas, in northeast Georgia, Franklin, Habersham, Hart, Rabun, and Stephens. In North Carolina, Buncombe, Cabarrus, Gaston, Henderson, Macon, Mecklenburg, Northern Jackson, Rowan, Southern Jackson, Transylvania, and Union. In Upstate South Carolina, Anderson, Cherokee, Chester, Greater Greenville, Greater Oconee, Greater Pickens, Greenville Mountains, Oconee Mountains, Pickens Mountains, Spartanburg, Union, and York.

* Rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches are possible across the region today through Sunday, with some locations in and near the mountains seeing 4 to 6 inches. Torrential rain showers repeatedly affecting the same location may cause flash flooding to develop very quickly.

* The heavy rainfall will cause streams to rise quickly and some might come out of their banks. Urban flooding may also occur in locations that have poor drainage. If more than 5 inches of rain were to fall, some locations along and near the Blue Ridge Escarpment could have isolated landslide activity, especially along modified slopes.
