Narrative:
A Thousand Oaks resident thwarted a suspect’s attempt to steal her wallet from a local grocery store. The victim alerted store employees who assisted with detaining the suspect until the arrival of deputies with the Thousand Oaks Police Department.

On June 11, 2019, a female victim was shopping at Trader Joes located at 125 N Reino Road. She placed her unzipped purse in the shopping cart. As the victim was looking at produce, she was approached by an unknown male who attempted to engage her in conversation.  Fearing the male may be distracting her; she looked back at her shopping cart and saw a female holding her wallet. The victim immediately grabbed the female suspect by the shirt and yelled to alert other customers in the store. She struggled with the suspect who eventually dropped the wallet and broke free from her grasp.  The female suspect was eventually detained by store personnel for the responding deputies. The male suspect fled from the store on foot and his identity is not yet known.

During the arrest, the female suspect identified herself as Javiera Carvallo, but upon further investigation she was identified as Javiera Orly Rojas Alarcon.  Alarcon was booked at the Pre-Trial Detention Facility and is being held on $500,000.00 bail.

The city of Thousand Oaks has seen an increase in wallet thefts and is requesting the community’s assistance to curb this crime of opportunity by doing the following:

  • If possible, carry your purse over your shoulder or place the purse strap across your body

  • If you must place your purse in the shopping cart, NEVER leave your purse unattended
  • Keep the zipper on your purse closed
  • Pay attention to people around you who may get too close to your shopping cart
  • Be aware of other shoppers who may distract you or offer assistance while your purse is unattended in the shopping cart

Be vigilant and aware of your surroundings. These suspects are counting on you being distracted. Please report any suspicious activity to the Thousand Oaks Police Department at (805) 654-9511 or 911.
