INCIDENT:    Brandishing a Weapon / Deputy-Involved Shooting
 
LOCATION: Descanso Avenue/Pipeline Avenue, Chino Hills
 
SUSPECT:    Jose Javier Gonzalez, age 52 a resident of Chino Hills
 
VICTIM:          San Bernardino County Deputy Sheriff                
 
SUMMARY:
On Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at 7:47 p.m., deputies responded to a suspicious person brandishing a knife, yelling and walking in and out of traffic in the area of Descanso Avenue and Pipeline Avenue in Chino Hills.  Callers were advising Sheriff’s dispatch that the subject, later identified as Jose Javier Gonzalez, appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance and was seen carrying two knives. When deputies arrived and contacted Gonzalez, he was uncooperative and continued making threats to kill people, while being in close proximity to a densely populated residential and commercial area. As deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation, Gonzalez ignored deputies’ commands to drop his weapons and deputies deployed less lethal rounds. Moments later, while still armed with two knives, Gonzalez ran toward a deputy and a deputy involved shooting occurred. Gonzalez was transported to Pomona Valley Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased at 12:29 a.m.
 
Investigators from the Homicide Detail responded to conduct the investigation.
