EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING IN EFFECT FROM FRIDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH SATURDAY EVENING
* HEAT INDEX VALUES...Up to 113 due to temperatures in the upper 90s, and dewpoints in the mid-70s.
* TIMING...12 pm Friday through 10 pm Saturday.
* IMPACTS...Extreme heat can cause illness and death among at-risk population who cannot stay cool. The excessive heat may quickly cause heat stress or heat stroke.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
An Excessive Heat Warning means that the combination of heat and humidity will create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are possible.
Due to the extreme heat, The Town of Westport would like to remind residents of health and safety measures to protect against heat-related illnesses and to take special care of young children, seniors and other at-risk populations:
• Find air conditioning, if possible.
• Check on family members and neighbors.
• Drink plenty of fluids.
• Avoid strenuous activities.
• Watch for heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.
• Never leave people or pets in a closed car.
• Watch for heat illness.
• Wear light clothing
The following designated cooling centers are open to the public this week:
• The Center for Senior Activities, 21 Imperial Avenue:
Friday 7:30am-4:30pm; Sat 8:30am-3pm
• The Westport Public Library, 20 Jesup Rd:
Friday, 9am-6pm; Saturday, 9am-5pm and Sunday, 1pm-5pm.
• Westport Historical Society, 25 Avery Place:
Friday, 10am- 6pm, Saturday, 10am – 5pm, Sunday, 10AM to 5pm
• Westport YMCA, 14 Allen Raymond Lane: Lobby open to public
Friday 5am-10pm, Sat. 7am-7:30pm, Sun. 7:30am-6pm
