Fire Press Release
At 6:23 pm, Suisun City Fire Department responded for a report of a large vegetation fire just east of Cordelia Rd and Pennsylvania. Chief 4702 and Chief 4700 arrived on scene to find multiple stacks of old railroad ties, over 100 individual railroad ties, on fire. Suisun City Fire Department, Fairfield FD, and Suisun Fire District all worked to contain this fire before it could spread to affect any residents. A massive amount of smoke was put off from this fire, affecting the air quality of much of Suisun City and especially old town, for approx 40 minutes. The fire is fully contained at this time. Suisun City Fire Chiefs are working with CAL OES and Solano County Environmental Health Department for the associated HAZMAT runoff from the fire. The railroad ties are soaked in an oil based solution called creosote and can be harmful to the environment if the run off is realesed into the marsh lands.
The cause of the fire was Union Pacific Railroad subcontractors utilizing torches to cut bolts off of old railroad ties. Despite their best efforts to keep the railroad ties wet, the fire sparked and quickly grew out of control.
There were no injuries reported and minimal property damage. Suisun City Fire Department will remain on-scene for approximately another hour to mop up the fire.
